So today is my last post on the Something Wicked tour and I have to admit, I’m a little sad to see it go.

“What are you doing to yourself?” Beck asked.
The Dark Master, Decker, sighed. Only his twin would be more concerned about him than the people he admitted to killing. He’d tried so hard to sever himself from everything, even his family. Sitting next to Beck in the car, Decker realized he couldn’t walk away from the brother he wanted to shelter from the darker side of their existence.
“I don’t know,” Decker replied. “I can’t stop the pain.”
“What pain?”
“I don’t know. I can’t kill myself. I can’t stop the pain. Every life I take makes me want to kill again. The blood, the thrill…”
Beck was staring at him.
“It’s been six weeks,” Decker added, aware of the desperation that crept into his voice. The last two lives he’d taken, he couldn’t even remember anything beyond a haze of hunger and bloodlust. Killing consumed him more each time. He’d never make it as long as his mother did. He’d be crazy or dead within the year.
Like me.
The voices in his head were his predecessors, the voices of all the dead Dark Masters and Mistresses that came before him. They whispered to him all day long. They gave him advice. They told him how to use his magick. They taught him how to kill.
The one that spoke to him was Bartholomew, known as The Terrible, whose rein of murder lasted for decades. Only when Decker became the latest in a long line of Dark Masters did he learn the truth about Bartholomew. His ancestor didn’t just randomly go crazy and start slaughtering Dark, Light and humans. He had the choice Decker did: to kill his love or sacrifice his own soul.
We made the same choice, Decker replied to Bartholomew. Summer’s death was an accident. Decker tripped and pushed her off a cliff. He killed the girl meant to be his partner, his counterbalance, his love.
His mother had brought him the news of Summer’s death, along with the promise ring he gave Summer the day before her death. He reached for it now. It rested against his amulet on the leather strap around his neck. He kept hoping he’d feel some trace of Summer there, some comfort.
It was just a cold ring with pink sapphires as sweet and delicate as Summer’s life. He lost everything that night. Yet the same madness that claimed Bartholomew was creeping upon him. There was no winning: if Summer lived, he’d go crazy like Bartholomew. If Summer died, he’d go crazy like Bartholomew, because every Dark Master had a counterbalance. His mother had his father, and he had none.
He was doomed.
